What is Safe Helpline's App?


The Safe Helpline App is a mobile application that allows you to easily create a customized self-care plan and utilize specially designed self-care exercises directly from a smartphone.

You can also connect to all of the other Safe Helpline resources (Telephone Helpline, Online Helpline, Responder Database, and Safe HelpRoom) directly from the App.

The Safe Helpline App is free and can be found in the Apple and Android App stores (search: DoD Safe Helpline). 

How Can the Safe Helpline App Help Me?


Self-care and ongoing support - You can supplement on-going therapy by identifying trends and quickly accessing self-care exercises to help with a difficult moment. You can also directly access the Safe HelpRoom to securely chat with other survivors.

Information and Resources - You can access information within the App to learn more about sexual assault, such as what to do if you or someone you know has been assaulted and the effects of sexual assault. In addition, you can access the full Safe Helpline database of military and civilian resources.

Crisis Support - You can immediately access the Telephone and Online Helplines for crisis intervention support and information to help you decide your next steps.

Gender Neutral design - all of the Self-Care exercises are available in both male and female voices and graphics on the App were designed to be gender neutral.

What is the Self-Care Plan and How Can it Help Me?


The self-care plan is a series of six questions designed to identify how you, as a survivor of sexual assault in the military, are feeling at that moment. Questions are answered on a sliding scale of one to five, and based on your responses different exercises are recommended. Self-care plans are saved on your phone only and can be used to supplement ongoing therapy and help identify trends in the user’s healing journey.

The self-care plan asks the following six questions:

  • How often do you feel sad?
  • How often do you feel anxious?
  • How often do you have trouble falling or staying asleep?
  • How often do you feel lonely or isolated?
  • How often do you feel stressed or frightened?
  • How often do you feel hopeless about the present or future?
How is the Telephone Helpline Integrated in the Safe Helpline App?


Safe Helpline uses Voice over IP (VoIP) technology to enable free access to the Telephone Helpline directly from the App and was specifically designed for members of the DoD community stationed Outside the Continental United States.

This technology allows you to access Safe Helpline without the need for calling cards, expensive international phone plans, or having to use the Defense Switched Network (DSN) if you do not feel safe. It also ensures that use of the Telephone Helpline does not show up on your cell phone bill or call history. VoIP technology also enables you to call the Telephone Helpline with only a WiFi connection.  

How has Safe Helpline Kept the App Secure and is Activity on the App Traceable by Third Parties?


As with all Safe Helpline technology, The Safe Helpline App was created by RAINN to protect your safety and anonymity by ensuring that no personally identifiable information (PII) is collected.

The following precautions have been implemented to protect your privacy:

  • The App does not require your information when it is initially downloaded.
  • No information on how you use the App is ever shared with Safe Helpline or DoD SAPRO. This includes how often you use the App, who is using the App, where you use the App, etc.
  • Although Self-Care plans are saved to identify trends, all plan information is stored only on your phone. If the App is uninstalled, all saved self-care plans are deleted.

Also, the App was specifically designed to ensure that you could use the App without fear of being discovered. Aesthetics such as the type of text on display and images used were all chosen to be soothing and ensure you feel safe using the App in a public environment.

Keep in mind that if you are using a DoD or other work-related device, your employer may be able to track your usage of this app.
